GORDON QUAN
A LIFE OF SERVICE
Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan (1973) is known for his commit- ment to his work. Whether reviewing city policies, or addressing client concerns in his law firm, Quan always puts forth his best effort to help others in need.
Quan's altruism stems from his first job out of college, teaching and counseling underprivileged teens. This experience influenced him to pursue a graduate degree in educa- tion at the University of Houston, a place that Quan felt gave him more than just a degree.
“Going through the counseling program at UH was invaluable because it really taught me how to read people's problems,” Quan said. “Although I am a lawyer by profession, I look at myself as more than that. I do not use a 'bandage approach' to fixing people's problems. I want to know what's really going on with someone so I can truly help them.”
Quan stays very busy, working mostly in his City Council office, while also overseeing a few cases at the immigration law firm he founded in 1980, Quan, Burdette & Perez. When asked if he prefers one role over the other, Quan seemed undecided.
“I cannot choose because there is just so much gratification that comes with both roles,” Quan said. “I feel privileged because I am allowed the ability to positively affect the Houston community. My work at the firm is also rewarding because I have the opportunity to change the course of an entire family's history.”
If that isn't impressive enough, he also spends much of his free time volunteering in the Houston community with various organizations such as YMCA International. He also stays active with UH by working with the Law Center's immigration clinic and the Asian Alumni Association.
“I would like to see more people show their Cougar pride by involving themselves with the university any way they can,” Quan said. “I try to do what I can and I have had nothingbut enjoyable experiences.”
No matter how busy he may be, however, Quan is a family man at heart. Recently, Quan and his wife Sylvia (1974), who he met on campus, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple has three daughters, Kristen, Caroline and Katherine. ( more )
