EDUARDO "EDDIE" ELIZONDO
('91, M.Ed. '95)

Eduardo “Eddie” Elizondo ('91, M.Ed. '95) says he owes it all to his high school guidance counselor.
That counselor encouraged Elizondo to apply for an Academic Excellence Scholarship that was being awarded for the first time to Latino students, and the rest is history.
Elizondo received the scholarship and headed to the University of Houston, where he graduated with degrees in psychology and educational psychology. He decided that he wasn't quite ready to leave campus when he finished with his degrees, and he began his career working as an Admissions Counselor at UH. He says that he especially enjoyed working in Admissions because he had the opportunity to recruit Latino students like himself and work to retain them throughout their college years.
Elizondo believes that his devotion to helping students emerged from his own high school needs. “I know how important is to have people that lend you a hand,” Elizondo recalled. “If someone sincerely offers you help, take advantage of that opportunity.”
He estimates that he has touched the lives of more than 500 students throughout the eleven years he worked for UH. Elizondo says that he “still remains friends with most of them” and is “proud to see the achievements of my students; that's the best satisfaction.”
In addition being an Admissions Counselor, he served as Program Coordinator, Program Manager, Campus Activities Advisor, Interim Assistant Dean of Students, and Instructor of Mexican American Studies.
Elizondo has moved out of the higher education arena, but his focus on supporting the Latino community has not been left behind. He recently became the Marketing Manager for RUMBO newspaper. RUMBO is the largest network of Spanish language newspapers in Texas.
Elizondo has been a HAO Life Member since 2004 and is involved with the Association of Hispanic Alumni, Frontier Fiesta, Heritage Society, and Omega Delta Phi.
