DAVID DOLL
('88, M.B.A. '92)

Whether he's leading his company or on the ice slashing in to score the winning puck, history suggests that David Doll ('88, M.B.A. '92), knows exactly where he is going.
Doll grew up in upstate New York, but always had a desire to attend college in the south. He enrolled at the University of Houston nearly 25 years ago, and he's been a Texan ever since. Doll graduated with summa cum laude honors twice, earning a bachelor's in finance and later, an MBA with a concentration in taxation.
“There are relatively few universities across the country that offer the dual track of work experience and college experience simultaneously,” Doll said. “At the age of 19, I had the opportunity to begin working in brokerage businesses, stock exchange firms and ultimately in an investment banking firm. Those experiences directly paralleled my degree and provided me with a resume before I had even graduated from college.”
Today, Doll serves a CEO of the Kanaly Trust Company, an independent Houston-based financial planning firm that manages approximately $2 billion in assets. He provides direct oversight to 70 employees and works with individual clients to offer financial and investment management solutions. Doll claims that the key to successful money management is having a strong financial plan.
“For most people, managing finances is a rear view mirror equation. They look backwards and then try to regroup, react, or make amends,” he said. “It's much easier to think ahead about your financial decisions, know where you want to go and drive looking out the front windshield.”
When he's not managing funds, Doll and his family spend most of their time on the ice. Although Doll hadn't laced up skates since his childhood, his son Graham's interest in ice hockey rekindled his love for the sport. Now, in addition to coaching two junior ice hockey teams, Doll also plays in a men's league. His 12-year-old daughter, Erin Elizabeth, is the family's figure skater and Doll's wife, Heidi, a former ski instructor, is their biggest fan.
The UH graduate is also involved with various community groups and is the founding chairman of Houston's Knowledge is Power Program. He also shares his strengths with his alma mater by chairing HAO's Investment Committee.
“My life is pretty diverse,” said Doll. “I liken it to juggling a lot of balls in the air and keeping them up there.”
