What is Cougar Advocates for Texas?
The program, launched in 1998, is an effort of the Houston Alumni Organization to encourage, support, and coordinate alumni activities on behalf of higher education in the State of Texas. Cougar Advocates for Texas seeks, through activities and projects, to bring the full force of alumni opinion to bear upon the process of state government toward higher education. They advocate to their representatives and/or senators on behalf of the University of Houston and higher education in general. Information about important issues affecting UH is given to more than 300 advocates before the legislative session, and those advocates call, write, visit, or e-mail their legislators about those issues.

What Does An Advocate Do?
Advocates may be called upon to contact specific legislators concerning issues that affect the university and higher education. Other opportunities to participate may be as simple as thanking your legislator for something he or she may have done for your community. Advocacy events, such as receptions and lunches with legislators around the state, are planned to update advocates and provide an opportunity for advocates to build relationships with their legislators. Our role is to keep volunteer advocates informed about legislative activity and to promote tips on how to simply and effectively communicate with legislators.

How much time will being an advocate take?
The program is completely voluntary. Your level of involvement is up to you! Being an advocate doesn't have to be time-consuming. You can devote as little or as much time as you want to the Network. Every little bit helps!
